The integrity of the 2026 College World Series Finals is cast into a storm of public scrutiny. Stephen Moore, a prominent writer and insider covering North Carolina sports, challenged the NCAA’s vetting process of umpires, alleging conflict of interest.
The controversy surrounds umpire Billy Van Raaphorst. He served as the home plate umpire during the deciding Game 3 of the 2026 College World Series Finals between the Oklahoma Sooners and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Raaphorst’s actions and decisions during the game drew widespread criticism from fans and analysts alike.
After North Carolina’s crushing 13-2 loss on Monday, Moore tagged the NCAA on his X post, highlighting his findings about Raaphorst.
“I did some checking to make sure this is real. It is,” Moore wrote.”Straight from Raaphorst’s own Facebook page. This is a wildly blatant conflict of interest and it took me all of 5 minutes to find it. Its the national championship. How the hell do you let this guy call the game? How do you not perform even the most basic of background checks?”
“You can conduct massive investigations and ban players for match fixing, point shaving, and gambling on their own team, but you couldnt be bothered to make sure one of your umpires for the national championship dodnt have a preconceived bias?” he added.
Moore concluded his post by equating Raaphorst’s assignment as the home plate umpire akin to hypothetical scenario of Alex Rodriguez umpiring in the 2004 ALCS against the Red Sox. As such, he found NCAA’s decision to assign Raaphorst inexcusable and pathetic.
Moore’s post also included a screenshot of Raaphorst’s X profile and also a Facebook post from October 2010 in which the umpire repped a Sooner’s t-shirt.
College World Series Umpire Interrupts North Carolina Pitcher’s Warm-Up
Home plate umpire Billy Van Raaphorst faced scrutiny for several specific moments during the 2026 College World Series Finals decider on Monday. The most talked about incident was when he interrupted the warm-up of Caden Glauber, the relief pitcher of North Carolina.
The Tar Heels brought in Glauber to start the top of the fourth inning, while the team trailed Oklahoma 3-1. Raaphorst abruplty cut Glauber’s warm-up, forcing the pitcher to throw before he felt loose.
The situation visibly rattled Glauber, who also faced a pitch-clock violation moments later. The pitcher threw eight consecutive balls, walking two batters, loading the bases before he was taken out.
Raaphorst also called an inconsistent strikezone throughout the game. He frequently gave strikes on pitches that appeared high and inside. Frustration bolied in the North Carolina dugout, resuting in the home plate umpire issuing a stern warning to everyone in the dugout.
