Alex Rodriguez Urges Yankees Not To Waste Aaron Judge’s Prime Amid 16-Year World Series Drought

New York Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez appeared on the WFAN Sports Radio broadcast to discuss potential trade strategies for the Bronx Bombers before the August 3 trade deadline.

In his detailed reply to the question about the Yankees’ approach, Rodriguez said the team needs to go all-in this season, citing weak American League competition and the need to propel star Aaron Judge toward a World Series title.

“That window’s closing. And it puts tremendous pressure on Brian Cashman, ownership, and the fan base. And what an absolute tragedy it would be to have one of the greatest players of our generation only go to one World Series and not win. So I hope that, look, this is the bottom line, Sean. And I know I love both of you guys. You guys do such great work. I listen all the time,” Rodriguez said.

“If you’re the Yankees, it’s a very simple formula. This is the weakest the American League has been in our lifetime, in all our lifetimes. The National League is very strong. You have a scenario where you can play the White Sox and the Rays and go to the World Series. So if you’re management, if you have an opportunity to go all in, you’ve got to put all your chips in now,” he added.

Judge was named captain of the team after signing a nine-year, $360 million extension in 2023. Since his major league debut in 2016, he has earned eight All-Star selections and three AL MVP awards.

The Yankees’ closest attempt at a World Series under his leadership came in 2024, when they were defeated by the National League champions, the LA Dodgers, in five games.

Which Two Players Did Alex Rodriguez Urge the Yankees to Target Ahead of the Trade Deadline?

Alex Rodriguez identified his primary trade targets for the Bombers before the deadline, naming Mason Miller from the San Diego Padres and Jeremy Pena from the Houston Astros. He supported his choices by citing examples of former franchise icons in those roles, such as Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, and encouraged the organization to restore the championship spirit in the clubhouse.

“I would go get Mason [Miller] and [Jeremy] Pena,” Rodriguez said. “You know why? Because a shortstop… look what Derek Jeter did here. You watched him here for 20 years, he was your leader, he was your Jalen Brunson. Everything starts with that leader up the middle, but you need that guy to be rock solid,” Rodriguez said.

“You know when the Knicks fans look at Brunson, everyone feels good, right? When everyone looked at Derek Jeter, there’s good feelings. Mariano Rivera, good feelings… I think it’s really important to bring championship DNA back in the building,” he added.

The Bombers hold a 54-43 record this season, placing second in the AL East, 2.5 games behind division leaders the TB Rays. They started the second half with a loss to the Dodgers on Friday night in the Bronx.
