New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was clearly upset with 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr. on Monday night after the Bahamian player was seen on camera playing defense with a lollipop in his mouth. The incident occurred during the Yankees’ 5-3 loss to the Tigers at Comerica Park and was quickly captured on camera, with sportscasters also noticing.
The video went viral on social media, eliciting mixed reactions from baseball fans. With Boone’s candid opinion about the incident now public, fans are wondering what steps the manager will take to prevent similar behavior. Meanwhile, some critics continue to criticize the lax management, asserting that the clubhouse culture is worsening.
Aaron Boone Unaware Jazz Chisholm Jr. Had Previously Batted With a Lollipop
During a casual appearance on the Talkin’ Yanks show, Boone was asked about Monday night. The Yankees manager said he had spoken with Chisholm Jr. and that such dismissive behavior on the field won’t happen again.
“Oh yeah, that pisses me off. I didn’t know about it until after the game. He and I talked about that. That won’t be going on,” Boone said.
When the show’s hosts told him it was the second time this season that Chisholm Jr. had done something similar during a game, Boone looked puzzled and said he had little idea about it. Earlier this season, Chisholm Jr. had come out for an at-bat against Boston on a chilly day with a lollipop in his mouth.
The Yankees took Game 2 against the Tigers on Tuesday night and have now leveled the series, with the series finale set for Wednesday.
