Why A.J. Haulcy Picked LSU: Top Transfer DB Makes Game-Changing Decision After Portal Visit

Haulcy, one of the best safeties in college football, has decided where he will play next. On Sunday, after visiting LSU, he officially committed to the Tigers, picking them over Miami, Ole Miss, and SMU. ESPN reporter Pete Thamel announced the news on Twitter:

“Former Houston safety A.J. Haulcy has committed to LSU on his visit, per @APSportsAgency. He was one of top remaining players in the NCAA transfer portal. He picked LSU over Miami.”

Haulcy’s decision comes after an incredible season at Houston, where he earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors in 2024. The 6-foot, 215-pound safety recorded 74 tackles, eight pass breakups, and five interceptions. He was also exceptional as a freshman at New Mexico, where he posted 86 tackles, including eight in a game against LSU.

After transferring to Houston, he followed up with 97 tackles in his sophomore season. Over three years, he has played more than 2,100 snaps and built a reputation as one of college football’s most consistent defenders.

His recruitment was one of the most interesting stories in college football this offseason. It started when Miami worked hard to recruit Haulcy. They gave him a 48-hour visit with head coach Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes’ staff. Many people thought Miami was the favorite because it seemed they were close to getting him.

Then, to everyone’s surprise, the 21-year-old left Miami without making a decision. Seizing the opportunity, the Tigers swiftly intervened to pursue him. LSU became the favorite as the weekend went on, while Miami’s chances seemed to fade. By Sunday, Haulcy was visiting LSU, and they won the battle for his commitment.

LSU has been aggressive in the transfer portal, adding 18 players this offseason, including several top-ranked recruits. With Haulcy, they add an experienced, high-IQ safety who can make plays all over the field.

He is keen to read offenses, delivers forceful hits, and consistently finds himself in the correct position at the right moment. As LSU gears up for the 2025 season, Haulcy’s arrival could be the missing piece in the Tigers’ secondary.
