The Philadelphia 76ers have done what few perhaps gave them the chance to do, beating the Boston Celtics in the NBA Playoffs over a grueling seven games, wrapping things up with a victory in the final game today.
And perhaps happiest with the win is South Carolina Women’s Basketball head coach Dawn Staley. The Gamecocks’ boss is a well known Philadelphia fan, and she didn’t hide her emotion one bit, taking to X to talk about the well earned victory for the 76ers.
Coach Staley’s excitement was palpable, and its clear she believes the Sixers can go all the way this time, and few would bet against it after this stunning display.
“Sixers played like 215/267 tonite! Let’s gooooo baby! Let’s goooo Philly!! It was always SIXERS in 7!!!,” she said on X.
Game 7 went to Philadelphia with a final score of 109-100, with Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid leading the charge, negating the threats of top Celtics stars such as Jaylen Brown and Derrick White during the game.
Why Does Dawn Staley Love the Philadelphia 76ers?
Dawn Staley’s love for the Sixers comes primarily because of the fact that she’s a Philly native, keeping deep ties with the city even today, despite her long association with the South Carolina Women’s Gamecocks in Columbia, SC.
Staley has always been a fan of the 76ers and has long been inspired by the team in her own endeavors as a head coach during her time in the spotlight.
That feeling has never really left, and many opportunities to coach further have come, but perhaps Staley will never take a job at the highest level unless it’s one that gives her a chance to be closer to her childhood team.
Staley had most notably interviewed for the job at the New York Knicks, but the NBA didn’t seem like the right fit, though this might change especially if the Sixers ever come calling.
