Dawn Staley and Tessa Johnson are no strangers to breaking practices, but a recent one was special. With the South Carolina Gamecocks still alive in March Madness, the team was seen trying to keep things loose while also celebrating the team’s good fortune.
In a recent reel posted on the team’s official Instagram account, coach Staley, Johnson and seemingly everyone on the team (sans one coach) were seen dancing at what appeared to be the end of a practice. There was no music, but players were seen singing and vibing.
On Saturday, South Carolina comfortably defeated the Oklahoma Sooners by a score of 94-68. The win in the Sweet 16 round pushed the team into the Elite Eight.
In the contest, the Gamecocks delivered a steady and consistent scoring effort with at least 21 points per quarter, including its game-best 26 points in the fourth quarter. The Sooners were held to just one quarter of at least 20 points.
Ta’Niya Latson led the team in scoring in the contest with 28 points, including a perfect run of 10 made free throws in 10 attempts. The team’s upcoming matchup could be a tougher one.
Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks Waste No Time Heading Into Elite Eight
Just two days after defeating the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, Dawn Staley’s team is set to face the third-ranked TCU Horned Frogs on Monday. Tipoff will take place at 9 p.m. EST.
The Horned Frogs are coming off a tight 10-point win over the 10th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday. Staley’s unit will need to find a way to slow down Marta Suarez and Olivia Miles, who dominated in the contest. Suarez scored 33 points while Miles scored 28 points.
Of course, if Staley’s defense meets its match, it will seemingly put pressure on Ta’Niya Latson as well as Tessa Johnson and Raven Johnson to get as many baskets as possible, as any misses at that point could undo months of work.
