The Dallas Wings are looking to put Friday’s thrashing at the hands of the Atlanta Dream behind them. In the finale of their three-game road trip, they’ll face the New York Liberty on Sunday.
The Wings opened the trip with a 99-89 win over the Chicago Sky before ultimately falling 86-69 to the Dream on Friday. The loss brought Dallas back to .500. The Wings have three wins so far this season, with two coming on the road.
Paige Bueckers was one of several players who struggled significantly against the Dream. The sophomore star posted a career-low seven points on 3-for-13 shooting from the field and 1-for-6 shooting from 3-point range.
Meanwhile, Arike Ogunbowale had just two points on 1-for-11 shooting from the field and 0-for-5 from deep. Needless to say, both performed far below expectations and will be aiming for bounce-back performances. Awak Kuier led the Wings off the bench with 16 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting night, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
The Liberty also enter the game coming off a defeat. New York suffered its second loss of the season after falling 87-70 to the Golden State Valkyries. The Liberty are now 3-2 on the season.
New York stumbled out of the gate and trailed Golden State by 10 points before falling flat in crucial moments, exposing several defensive lapses the team failed to recover from at home.
Breanna Stewart led the Liberty with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Jonquel Jones added 16 points and eight rebounds. Rebekah Gardner also finished in double figures. Meanwhile, Satou Sabally, who made her Liberty debut, struggled with five points on 2-of-8 shooting along with four rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes.
The loss also prompted New York to waive guard Julie Vanloo and forward Alex Fowler. Vanloo scored two points with eight assists and four turnovers, while Fowler went scoreless and recorded just one steal.
With Satou Sabally back in the fold and Sabrina Ionescu making her debut on Sunday, it’s only a matter of time before the New York Liberty regain the form that made them one of the league’s most potent teams.
