As the free agency craze continues in the WNBA, Sophie Cunningham has emerged as another interesting prospect to watch out for. This past week, Cunningham’s name was included in a list of unrestricted free agents posted by the WNBA on social media.
Under the terms of the new CBA, which the league and the players’ association have reached a tentative agreement on, teams can now offer supermax contracts worth $1.4 million. While there’s still a possibility that Cunningham will be offered a supermax by the Fever, there are other teams that could also be targeting the six-year pro known for her hustle on the defensive end. The Mercury are looking to reach the Finals for a second consecutive season, and the addition of Cunningham gives them a welcome energy boost on both ends of the floor.
New York Liberty
There’s also the possibility that Cunningham will join Sabally in the Big Apple. The Liberty will reportedly re-sign Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, but the addition of another workhorse wouldn’t be a bad idea for this Eastern Conference team with high aspirations. Cunningham, who doesn’t need the ball in her hands to be effective, can do the dirty work while her All-Star teammates stuff the stat sheets.
Portland Fire
