As the free agency craze continues in the WNBA, Sophie Cunningham has emerged as another interesting prospect to watch out for. This past week, Cunningham’s name was included in a list of unrestricted free agents posted by the WNBA on social media.

Under the terms of the new CBA, which the league and the players’ association have reached a tentative agreement on, teams can now offer supermax contracts worth $1.4 million. While there’s still a possibility that Cunningham will be offered a supermax by the Fever, there are other teams that could also be targeting the six-year pro known for her hustle on the defensive end. Some of these teams, in fact, currently have more cap space than the Fever to sign Cunningham to a supermax deal.

    Phoenix Mercury

The departure of Satou Sabally (who signed with the New York Liberty this past week) has cleared some cap space for the Mercury, giving them flexibility with their next moves. The Mercury are looking to reach the Finals for a second consecutive season, and the addition of Cunningham gives them a welcome energy boost on both ends of the floor.

    New York Liberty

There’s also the possibility that Cunningham will join Sabally in the Big Apple. The Liberty will reportedly re-sign Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart, but the addition of another workhorse wouldn’t be a bad idea for this Eastern Conference team with high aspirations. Cunningham, who doesn’t need the ball in her hands to be effective, can do the dirty work while her All-Star teammates stuff the stat sheets.

    Portland Fire

Of course, no teams have more flexibility in the WNBA than the expansion squads. For one, the Portland Fire have signed just two players at this point (Bridget Carleton and Karlie Samuelson), and they can certainly use a veteran presence. Sophie Cunningham provides that and more.

    Minnesota Lynx

The Lynx’s 2025 season was derailed by Napheesa Collier’s injury, and they’ll be looking to bounce back this year. Minnesota has quite the number of free agents at this point, but it’s not hard to imagine that they’ll take a chance on Cunningham, who fits right in with the defensive identity that Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve is known for.

    Indiana Fever

In the end, the Fever might have the upper hand on every other WNBA team in the race to secure Cunningham’s services. Aside from the fact that the team still has cap space to sign Cunningham to a supermax (even after Kelsey Mitchell secured her own supermax deal), the 6-foot-1 guard has established strong bonds in Indiana, particularly with Caitlin Clark and Lexie Hull.
