Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham continues to struggle with injury concerns. Last year, the former Missouri Tigers standout’s seventh campaign was cut short due to a torn MCL in her right knee after colliding with her defender in a game against the Connecticut Sun. Since then, though, Cunningham has made a full recovery.
But, ahead of the Fever’s recent regular season game against the Chicago Sky, Cunningham was ruled out due to a right elbow injury. This was unexpected by onlookers, as Cunningham had just played all 11 Fever games this season so far. In her pre-game press conference uploaded by Fever insider Chloe Peterson on X/Twitter, Indiana coach Stephanie White gave more details on the extent of the 29-year-old’s setback.
“I know it’s been sore for a little while, and they’ve been doing treatment and really trying to get her ready to go. And I think the most important thing for us is, again, and you know we say this all the time, but it’s making sure that we’re extremely cautious, and we’re thinking about the big picture,” White said before she was asked about the injury’s timetable wherein she shared, “ I don’t have any idea. You know, I think it’s one day at a time.” (0:03)
There is no word yet on how long Cunningham will be out with the said elbow injury, but signs are pointing towards a quick return for the veteran. She is averaging 8.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in around 22.9 minutes in 11 appearances.
