The six-foot guard played 30 games for the Fever last season, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. She last played for the team in August, missing the remainder of the season after suffering an MCL tear.

The Fever went on to reach the WNBA semifinals, losing to A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces in Game 5. Meanwhile, Cunningham was sidelined and has been looking to get back to full fitness ever since.

Cunningham was on a one-year, $100,000 deal with the Fever, which expired in 2025, according to Spotrac. She will be an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with a team of her choosing, pending a CBA agreement between the WNBA and WNBPA.

Sophie Cunningham gives brutal WNBA verdict amid CBA negotiations

Sophie Cunningham addressed the CBA negotiations directly, expressing concern over the league’s handling of the situation and its impact on the WNBA’s image:

“It sucks, because how our negotiation is going, how all that’s going, it’s like we’re the laughingstock of sports right now,” Cunningham said on her “Show me Something” podcast. “Both sides are kinda getting frustrated, but I know us players are holding our ground, so it should be interesting.”

With the league’s May 8 regular-season start date approaching, both sides will be eager to reach an agreement as soon as possible. According to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, the league informed the WNBPA on Monday that a CBA agreement must be reached by Mar. 10, to not disrupt the schedule for the 2026 season.

With negotiations reaching their final stage, free agency could soon open up, leading to big decisions for many, including Sophie Cunningham. The Fever guard will have more on her plate this year as she will also be a part of Project B in Nov. 2026.
