All eyes will be on Caitlin Clark’s return to the court as Team USA Women’s Basketball takes on Senegal on Wednesday in the 2026 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament opener. Clark hasn’t played competitive basketball since August, after a series of injuries limited her to 13 games in 2025. She was dealing with ankle and groin injuries, which ended her season earlier than expected.
Nevertheless, with enough time passed and Clark fully recovered, she will have a chance to suit up and make her senior national team debut. All signs point towards Clark playing against Senegal as the USA looks to tip off the tournament with a win. The Fever’s official social media handle also confirmed her status on Tuesday with a post captioned:
“T-minus 20 hours til Caitlin Clark makes her senior national team debut for #USABWNT”
The USA has already booked its place in the World Cup after winning the gold medal in the 2026 FIBA Americas Tournament.
So the pressure won’t be as much on Clark and other young players, who can use this tournament to get used to the FIBA rules and regulations and find their rhythm before the big tournament later this year in September.
Caitlin Clark is motivated to play for Team USA in her first game after an injury-riddled season
Caitlin Clark isn’t as nervous to be thrown into the fire in her first game back since injury after eight months. The Fever superstar sounded motivated to play at a competitive level, hinting that it was a great opportunity for her to get back on track. Here’s what Clark said on Monday during a media session:
“Getting to [play] at this level for my first time back, there’s no better way to get tossed into the fire.”
Clark will have a lot weighing on her as she prepares for this tournament. That includes proving her critics wrong after she was snubbed from the Paris Olympics roster following a spectacular rookie season in the WNBA.
