Caitlin Clark led the Indiana Fever to victory on Friday night against the Seattle Storm. She scored 45 points and 10 assists in the game, becoming the first to put up a 40-point, 10-assist outing in the WNBA. While many celebrated the star’s record-breaking night, sports broadcaster Stan Verrett took the conversation elsewhere.
On X, the Clippers host reposted a tweet from Dave Portnoy, where the Barstool founder lauded Clark and wrote: “They hate her because they ain’t her.”
“This is the weirdo behavior I was referencing earlier,” Verrett wrote. “No one hates Caitlin Clark. But thinking and claiming people do seems to fill a strange void in the lives of some people. It needs to be studied by sociologists.”
His comments come amid ongoing controversy around the league not doing enough to protect Clark from physical play from her opponents. Verrett argued that portraying her as a universally hated personality creates a false narrative.
The discussion surrounding Clark has intensified over the past weeks following her physical altercations on the court. The situation became so serious that it even drew comments from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who described Clark as becoming “a political football in this country.”
Against Seattle, she got 45 points and 10 assists in just 29 minutes to lead the Fever to an 110-107 victory.
Caitlin Clark Speaks Out After Finishing With 45 Points
Despite the historic achievement, Clark stayed humble in her postgame interview.
“Some nights, like, you know you have it – even before the ball tips,” Clark said after the game. “I felt like it was going to be one of those for me. I feel like you just have to believe you’re going to have those type of nights, and you have to visualize having those types of nights. And I feel like that’s what I did.”
“I mean, it’s cool. I don’t really care. I know what I’m capable of, and I know what this team is capable of. It’s my job to help us win and be the best team in the WNBA, and I don’t think we’re there yet. So it’s my responsibility to help us get there,” she added.
Clark also revealed she entered the game feeling confident that something special was coming.
“I still feel like I can play better,” Clark said. “It’s one of the hardest things, coming back from injury and being out of the groove and having time off. You just have to kind of continue to believe in yourself and believe in the work you put in. This is great, but we have another really difficult test tomorrow, so got to get ready for that.”
Even after the historic outing, she insisted she still has work to do and another level to reach.
As Clark continues to break records in the WNBA, the conversations surrounding her will remain just as intense. And Friday night’s performance proved that the Fever star remains focused on winning games rather than engaging in controversies.
