The Golden State Valkyries made a surprise roster move, waiving fan favorite Kate Martin to open a vacant guard spot on Thursday.
The news comes as a surprise to fans who were almost certain Martin would stay with the Golden State long term. The 25-year-old was actually quite productive during her short time with the Valkyries in the inaugural season, averaging 6.2 points and 2.7 rebounds across 42 games.
Martin was nursing a Grade 1 quad strain injury and trending in the right direction, with many believing she would be questionable for the season opener against the Seattle Storm. But the harsh reality of being waived shocked and excited WNBA fans simultaneously.
Ever since the Las Vegas Aces waived Martin during the 2024 season, Indiana Fever fans have been begging for a reunion with franchise star Caitlin Clark. With each passing season, there have been opportunities and speculation surrounding a move to Indiana, but nothing has come to fruition.
So, as soon as the news broke out, fans expressed interest this time. Here are the reactions:
“Fever figure out how to cheat the waiver order idc,” a fan said.
“CC and Kate playing together would make me spontaneously combust! Like I would be so f***ing happy, I need it in my life,” another said.
“Fever…. I know you want another guard… sign Kate so CC can play with her bestie! Really hope she goes to a good team though. 🙏🏻,” another fan said.
“So Kate Martin is locked in for the Fever right?” another said.
“WTF? @IndianaFever it’s your time to reunite Kate Martin and Caitlin Clark!!!!” another said.
With both teams’ rosters almost set for the new season, the path to a reunion has not been clear. The Fever may decide to give Kate Martin another shot through one of the developmental contract spots currently open, but that does not appear likely at the moment.
Even if the Fever bring Martin to Indiana, she could be a nice addition to their developmental roster because of her solid two-way play. But there will likely be more competition from other teams for her services as well. She is exactly the type of reliable two-way guard playoff teams love to add, and it also does not hurt that she already has a good amount of experience and a strong fan following as well. But the next few days will tell the full story.
