Team USA cruised past Puerto Rico with a 91-48 win in their second game of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifiers. The result was never really in doubt, but one moment early in the game caught plenty of attention online. It involved one of Team USA’s biggest stars, Angel Reese.
Reese is known for dominating the paint on both ends of the floor. This time, however, she found herself on the wrong side of a highlight after Puerto Rico’s Imani McGee-Stafford rejected her layup attempt.
Midway through the second quarter, Team USA forced a steal and pushed the ball up the court on a fast break. Monique Billings passed the ball to Reese near the basket at the last moment, and it looked like a routine finish was coming. However, McGee-Stafford had other plans.
JaVale McGee’s younger sister read the play perfectly, held her position, and met Reese at the rim. She swatted the layup attempt away with authority, giving Puerto Rico one of its few big moments in an otherwise lopsided game.
The clip of the play quickly went viral on social media, with fans lauding McGee-Stafford.
“McGee DNA is lethal. Sent that shot back to Chicago! 🤡,” @NoahWaston said.
“Reese didn’t see that coming at all…,” @0xBitFarmer wrote.
“Runs in the family fr,” @thuyhatcl said.
“Her sh*t for swatted 😭😭😭,” @trendorfade said.
“She didn’t have to send it to the stands like that 😂😂😂,” @IMthtluckylady wrote.
“She would’ve missed anyway,” @KaslEric21 said.
Aside from the highlight block, McGee-Stafford also made a strong impact for Puerto Rico. She finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and two more blocks to lead her team in all three statistical categories.
Reese still got the last laugh, recording a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds as Team USA rolled to a comfortable 43-point victory.
Angel Reese makes headlines with new role in international basketball
Angel Reese has frequently been in the spotlight for her on-court play, from her WNBA and Unrivaled performances to her representation of Team USA. This time, however, Reese is making headlines for a move away from playing.
WNBL team, the Brisbane Bullets, announced on Tuesday that Reese has joined the club’s ownership group. She becomes part of the group alongside Jason Levien and Ben Haan.
The move marks another step in Reese’s growing presence in the business side of sports. In 2024, she joined the ownership group of United Soccer League team DC Power FC and also became part of the ownership group behind the sports brand TOGETHXR.
