Unrivaled co-founder Breanna Stewart held up an “ABOLISH ICE” sign when her name was called for the Mist team introduction. Stewart’s action came a day after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent allegedly killed Alex Pretti. The incident was the second fatal Border Patrol shooting in the city, prompting more rallies against the agency and the Trump administration.
Stewart wrote on Instagram to share her thoughts behind her action:
“As a mother, nothing scares me more than seeing families torn apart, children traumatized, and parents living in fear of losing their loved ones.
“Our communities deserve better. They deserve safety, dignity, and compassion. Not trauma and division. Saying Abolish ICE is about advocating policies that uplift families and strengthen communities, instead of fueling fear and violence.”
Angel Reese, DiJonai Carrington, Satou Sabally, Natasha Cloud, Isabelle Harrison, Michaela Onyenwere, Arike Ogunbowale and other WNBA players supported Stewart. They didn’t write anything but used fire, prayers, hearts and fist-bump emojis to stand behind Stewie.
On Sunday, CNN reported:
“The shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti yesterday marked the second time a Minneapolis resident has been killed by federal officers this month, deepening outrage over the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.”
Like in the killing of Renee Good on Jan. 7, the Trump administration is using “self-defense” as the reason behind the shooting. However, Trump said on Sunday, via the Wall Street Journal, that his team is “reviewing everything” in both Minneapolis shootings.
Regardless of the review, Breanna Stewart is urging the abolition of ICE. Angel Reese and other WNBA players, even those not playing in the Unrivaled, are throwing their support behind her.
Breanna Stewart leads Mist to 76-71 win over Vinyl
After the surprising and viral “Abolish ICE” statement for Sunday’s Mist-Vinyl game, Breanna Stewart starred for her team. The two-time WNBA MVP filled up the stat sheet for Mist to push her team to a 76-71 win.
Stewart filled up the stat sheet with 21 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. She hit the layup that ended Vinyl’s chance of pulling a come-from-behind win.
The win against Rhyne Howard and Co. pushed Breanna Stewart’s Mist to a 5-2 record, half a game behind Laces for the best record.
