After Caitlin Clark’s Technical Foul, Stephanie White Gets in Trouble with Refs While Protesting Call on Aliyah Boston

Shortly after Caitlin Clark picked up her third technical foul of the season this Thursday night, Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White picked up a technical foul of her own. This came after she complained about the officiating during the team’s game against the Chicago Sky.

In particular, White disagreed with a foul called on Fever star Aliyah Boston. The offensive foul was the fourth called on Boston during the game. At least one observer complained about the disparity in how the Fever coach defends her veteran and how she responds to Caitlin Clark being badgered by opposing defenses regularly.

Coincidentally, Clark’s technical foul was called this night because she complained about a not-called foul by Chicago’s Azura Stevens on her, which prevented her from scoring. At this, there wasn’t any kind of aired complain by Stephanie White.

In the end, the Fever won the game 114-106.

Caitlin Clark on her passion on the court

Clark has been criticized as of late for what is seen by some in the WNBA as emotional outbursts, or too much passion. Speaking before this week’s game against the Washington Mystics, the player reframed her passion as a strength and not a weakness to be managed:

“I don’t think I would be as good a player if I were very stoic and straight-faced all the time. You know, I always think you want your mind to be neutral, but like you also want to be excited and passionate and fiery and fisty, and maybe you have a moment with the ref in there, or maybe you get super excited and get the crowd hyped up like that. That’s what’s so fun about competitive sports, that’s what I like watching, competitive sports, and basketball is like one of the best environments to do that because the fans are right on top of you…”

“I think that’s why a lot of people have enjoyed watching over the course of my career… I wouldn’t be the player that I am if it weren’t for everyone who was cheering me on. People pushing me to be better, you know.”

In the end, the game against the Washington Mystics was won 78-76, with a last-minute shot by Caitlin Clark. This Thursday’s technical foul can be seen as yet another instance of the Fever player playing passionately.
