When Did Washington Huskies Last Win a Championship?

While this will be the first College Football Playoff National Championship Game appearance, this is not the first national title shot they’ve had in the program’s history.

The Huskies were a dominant team in 1991, beating every opponent by a whopping 461-101 total that year and winning their first championship. Ironically, that season also featured a matchup with the Wolverines that ended in a 34-14 win for the Huskies, and Washington hopes that history repeats itself this year as well.

1991 was the only time the program made it to or won a national title before this season, and while they have had many successful campaigns throughout the years, Monday night offers a unique opportunity for the Huskies that they hope not to squander.

The next closest chance the Huskies had since their 1991 season came nine years late in 2000 when they suffered a tough loss to conference foe, the Oregon Ducks, which derailed their chance at another title.

Instead, that season, Washington beat quarterback Drew Brees and the Purdue Boilermakers in the Rose Bowl, 34-24.

Washington Huskies Playoff Appearances

In the system the college football world is in now, this is the second opportunity for the Huskies program to compete in the playoff bracket. The first occurred in the 2016 season when the team faced off against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Unfortunately for the Huskies, that day was not theirs, and they fell to the Tide 24-7, ending what looked to be a promising season. This year offered new hope and a chance to make right any previous wrongs from seven seasons ago, and they did so by handing the Texas Longhorns a 37-31 loss.

The Huskies now have an excellent opportunity before them and a chance to have the Pac-12 go out on top as a champion.
