The game has been played every season since its inception in 1990, splitting between the two locations in the Sunshine State.

What Was the Former Name of the Pop-Tarts Bowl?

The Pop-Tarts Bowl has changed names a significant amount of times leading up to the 2023 showdown.

It was first formed as the Sunshine Football Classic. Still, it was never actually played under this name, nor even referred to as such, except during brief intervals between corporate sponsors and naming rights dealings that went on during that time.

While the game was played in Miami, it went by the name Blockbuster Bowl three times, the CarQuest Bowl five times, and the MicronPC Bowl three times.

In 2001, the bowl changed was relocated to Orlando. From there, the bowl was played three times as the Tangerine Bowl, which sounds familiar because that was the original title of the now-known Citrus Bowl. Foot Locker purchased naming rights in 2004, naming it the Champs Sports Bowl, which remained the name for eight years.

In 2012, naming rights were bought by Russell Athletic. As a result, five games were played as the Russell Athletic Bowl. In 2017, Camping World became the title sponsor, and three editions were played as the Camping World Bowl through 2019, including the 30th anniversary game.

In May 2020, Kellogg’s signed on as the new sponsor of the game, naming it the Cheez-It Bowl. Before finally and most recently, in May 2023, it was announced that the Pop-Tarts brand of Kellogg’s would be featured in the new name for the bowl, creating the Pop-Tarts Bowl, as we know it today.
