Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire Shares Promising Update on Behren Morton’s Injury Status

Joey McGuire has led Texas Tech to two straight winning seasons and bowl victories. And with a promising update on QB Behren Morton, a third straight is near.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders lost their starting quarterback to an injury for the seventh consecutive season in 2023, but after a promising update on Behren Morton, they hope there is no eighth.

Latest Update on Texas Tech QB Behren Morton’s Injury

During the opening day of Big 12 Media Days, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said that Morton has put a lot of time into his upper body and “looks so different than what he did a year ago.”

Morton stepped in for an injured Tyler Shough last year but suffered a Grade 3 AC sprain in his right shoulder against West Virginia in September. Although he played through the injury, it clearly hindered his ability at times.

Nevertheless, he led the Red Raiders to a 6-2 record as the starter, including a victory over Cal in the Independence Bowl. Morton finished the season with 1,754 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a 62% completion rate.

The injury kept Morton out of spring practices, as the coaching staff wanted to give him ample time to heal, considering the injury was to his throwing shoulder.

“First and foremost, if we were to play a game today, Behren Morton would be our starting quarterback,” said McGuire in April. “This decision was made in the best interest of Behren’s health going into next season. Behren will resume full football activities later this summer.”

Morton met with several specialists and was given the all-clear to throw with no limitations heading into the summer. If the injury bug plagues the QB room once again, the Red Raiders have a trio of young signal-callers to lean on: West Georgia sophomore transfer Cameran Brown, redshirt freshman Jake Strong, and, perhaps the most exciting of the group, four-star true freshman Will Hammond.
