Naomi Osaka’s fashion sense once again knew no bounds during her Australian Open first-round match Tuesday, where she dazzled fans with a striking new exoskeleton-inspired look.
Osaka made her entrance at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night wearing a tie-dye turquoise and green zip-up jacket featuring organic, tendril-like details flowing from the sleeves. The jacket was layered over a matching racerback top and paired with a white hat and umbrella.
The four-time Grand Slam champion revealed that the inspiration behind the outfit came from her daughter, Shai. Osaka said the idea first emerged while she was reading a story to her.
“There was an image of a jellyfish, and when I showed it to her, she got so excited,” Osaka said to Vogue.
Osaka brought the concept to Nike, who worked closely with her to transform the idea into reality. While she was thrilled with the final result, Osaka hinted that the look may be part of a broader creative journey rather than a one-off design.
“It translated beautifully into the movement and fluidity of the sheer layers on the dress and the jacket. When I saw it during the fitting, I remember thinking, ‘this is beautiful,’ but also feeling like the story wasn’t fully finished yet,” she stated.
Reflecting on the significance of the outfit, Osaka said she appreciated the opportunity to express herself and shape her own narrative through fashion:
“So much of the time, other people get to write our stories for us. This felt like a moment where I could write a little bit of my own.”
Shai’s Love for Reading Inspires Osaka On and Off the Court
Naomi Osaka, who is currently in Australia and has been away from her daughter Shai for nearly two weeks, said FaceTime calls continue to fuel her motivation from afar.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the start of her Australian Open campaign, Osaka spoke warmly about her daughter, highlighting Shai’s love of reading.
“She loves reading a lot. I always get books from every place that I play or every country,” Osaka said. “Reading with her is very funny, because she’ll kind of memorise the book because she loves reading so much, so we read it so often. She’ll read me the next page before I get to it, which is really funny.”
It comes as little surprise that her love of reading has translated into creativity, as reflected in Osaka’s striking new look at the Australian Open.
