Serena Williams’ dramatic move to ghost her singles post-match Wimbledon press conference has sparked controversy across the tennis world, alongside inviting sharp criticism from Brit legend Greg Rusedski. The former British world No. 1 pulled no punches as he dismissed her knee injury as a reason not to show up for the mandatory media briefing after the match.

After losing to Maya Joint in the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday, Williams was scheduled to sit for the mandatory post-match conference, just like every player. However, she decided not to, citing a severe knee flare-up that the 23-time Grand Slam champion faced during the first set of her match with Joint.

Picking up on this subject on the Thursday episode of his podcast, “Off Court With Greg Rusedski,” the ex-Brit No. 1 argued that Williams holds an elite prestige in the world of tennis and, regardless of her injury, should have made the effort to brief the world on her first Wimbledon experience in four years, instead of leaving fans in the dark.

He also suggested that if the injury was so bad, there should have been no problem in arranging some sort of special accommodation to assist the returning legend to address the media. Rusedski said:

“There’s no doubt she deserved a special invitation. You’re not going to say no to one of the greatest legends of the sport who wants to play singles, but it’s a shame she didn’t hold a press conference after losing. If she was so badly injured, they could have brought her in on a stretcher and put ice on her knee.”

Rusedski also pointed fingers at the All-England Club’s committee rules that allow players to skip the press meet if they cite injury:

“I would have liked to see her do it, but the rules allow for players to miss a match due to injury.”

Rusedski also admitted that it was disappointing not to hear from Williams about the loss, as only she knows the true physical and emotional weight of her first-round defeat.

A Brief on Serena Williams’ 2026 Tennis Journey

After her last professional appearance in 2022 at the U.S. Open, the 23-time Grand Slam champion made a surprising return on Tuesday, 9 June, at the Queen’s Club tournament. She started with a doubles run alongside Victoria Mboko and managed to clear the first round. The run was, however, short-lived as Mboko had to retire from the tournament due to an injury.

Williams then headed to the Berlin Open on Tuesday, 16 June, and teamed up with Karolina Muchova, but the duo got defeated by the pair Giuliana Olmos and Erin Routliffe 4–6, 4–6 in the first round.

Days later, Williams accepted a wildcard from Wimbledon to make a doubles run with Venus Williams, and eventually also landed the final singles wildcard, days before the tournament began. Her singles run, however, came to an end in the first round after she was defeated by the rising Australian star Maya Joint.

It remains to be seen how the returning legend manages to find the legendary momentum needed to ace her doubles run at Wimbledon alongside Venus.
