Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mother, Julia Salnikova, has opened up about his past relationship with Paula Badosa, shedding light on the reasons behind their breakup. She revealed that the relationship, heavily scrutinized by the media, ended up taking a significant mental toll on her son.

Tsitsipas recently arrived at the Italian Open, hoping to turn around what has been a difficult and inconsistent season, but his campaign came to a disappointing end far earlier than expected. The Greek suffered a shock first-round defeat to Tomas Machac, continuing his struggles on tour and extending his titleless run this year.

Salnikova, who is part of Tsitsipas’ team, was present in Rome and also spoke to Punto de Break. In the interview, she explained that the constant media spotlight surrounding Tsitsipas and Badosa’s relationship created immense pressure, which ultimately affected him mentally and contributed to their split.

“They were a good couple, but it was a burden for him,” Salnikova said. “He was pushing himself too hard. The constant photos, social media, and all the media attention gradually affected him. Although he said he enjoyed it, it was building up inside.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa began dating in May 2023 and initially split about a year later. However, the two reconciled shortly after, only to part ways again around Wimbledon 2025.

After the breakup, Stefanos Tsitsipas has moved on, while Paula Badosa is currently single. The Greek is now in a relationship with Kristen Thoms, and the couple made things official earlier this year.

Tsitsipas’ mother, Julia Salnikova, spoke highly of Thoms in her interview with Punto de Break, highlighting the positive impact she has had on her son’s life. Salnikova noted that Thoms’ presence has brought Tsitsipas a sense of stability and described her as someone who has given him a “very comfortable emotional life.”

“I think he’s matured in every way And his girlfriend’s presence has helped him tremendously,” Salnikova said. “She’s given him a very comfortable emotional life. I feel like I’ve known her for 90 years. She’s a very sweet girl, she understands tennis, she played for university, and she’s also built her own career in marketing and player representation.”

Next up for Stefanos Tsitsipas is the French Open, which is set to begin on May 24. The Greek will enter the tournament unseeded, as he is currently ranked No. 80 in the world.
