Iconic tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou recently spoke up about a Grand Slam statistic involving the legendary ‘Big Three’ of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Mouratoglou brought the statistic up to dismiss several fans’ claims that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s ATP top 10 rivals are nowhere near as good enough as the ones Federer, Nadal and Djokovic had to contend with.
According to many fans, the likes of Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin del Potro played at a much higher level than Alcaraz and Sinner’s present-day rivals in the ATP top 10. Based on this argument, the fans tend to opine that the Spaniard and the Italian have it all their way in contemporary men’s singles tennis, particularly spanning the four tennis Majors.
Through a recent video on Instagram, Mouratoglou dismissed this opinion. Citing the statistic that the great Federer himself never defeated both Nadal and Djokovic to win a Slam, the 55-year-old French coach said:
“In 15 years, only four players have won a Grand Slam beating two players out of the Big Three. Only four different players! Even Roger Federer never won a Grand Slam beating Nadal and Djokovic. This never happened.”
Mouratoglou went on to state that when Djokovic defeated two other Big Three members to win a Major (2011 US Open), the Serb didn’t have to face any of his other top 10 rivals at the time over the course of the tournament. The Frenchman added:
“And when Djokovic did it, yes he beat two members of the Big Three, but throughout the whole tournament, he didn’t beat any top 10. So that was not that difficult at that time and if so many times those players, those Big Three won Grand Slams without having to face the top 10, it’s probably because those guys lost before playing them.”
Concluding by putting up his defense of Alcaraz and Sinner’s top 10 rivals, Mouratoglou said:
“So to say that those guys were ‘so, so good, so, so much better than the current ones’ doesn’t really make sense.”
Patrick Mouratoglou’s Bold 2025 Take On Alcaraz & Sinner Being Better Than Federer, Nadal & Djokovic
In the buildup to the 2025 Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) Grand Final in London, Mouratoglou boldly claimed that Alcaraz and Sinner are complete players without weaknesses. Remembering how even Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, in their respective primes, had certain chinks in their armors, the French coach said:
“Ask any player how do you beat them and they will not have an answer. Fast balls, slow balls, drop shots, there is no weakness. That is modern tennis and that’s why these two are different. There is no weakness. When you look at 20 years ago, the best players had some weaknesses. I think the generation of Djokovic, Federer and Nadal and while those guys didn’t have too many weaknesses, the new generation are just so complete.”
Alcaraz and Sinner, having shared the men’s singles titles at all eight Majors played since the start of 2024, have the chance to keep their Slam domination going at the upcoming Australian Open.
