Novak Djokovic Reveals Real Reason Behind Family’s Absence At Australian Open 2026

Novak Djokovic has arrived in Melbourne, Australia, this year without his family. His family includes wife Jelena and their two kids: son Stefan and daughter Tara. Stefan is 11, and Tara is eight years old.

After the Serb won his second-round match against Francesco Maestrelli, the 10-time Australian Open champion was asked if his son Stefan was watching this match from home. Djokovic said it’s too late for him to be not sleeping as he’s got his own priorities like school and homework.

“They’re sleeping right now,” Djokovic said. “There are some more important priorities for them, you know, school, homework, their own activities.”

When Djokovic’s match was going on, it was already midnight in Europe. Therefore, Djokovic believes there’s no chance that his son caught his action live. The Serb acknowledged that he misses their support but knows that he can’t allow his son to skip school and travel with him.

“My son wanted to come, but he wants to do everything he can to avoid school, which is understandable,” Djokovic said. “He likes tennis, he likes his daddy as well, but no, not having them this year is obviously a bit different. But I know they’re always with me, always with me in my heart.”

Novak Djokovic Feels “Blessed” About His Kids Witnessing His Legacy

Novak Djokovic’s firstborn, Stefan, arrived in 2014. By then, Djokovic was already a six-time Grand Slam champion, four of them coming in Melbourne. That means his son got to witness his journey from six Grand Slam titles to becoming a 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic feels “blessed” that his son got to witness and experience the hard work his father put in to reach the top of the world and accomplish his dreams.

“When I became a father, one of the greatest wishes and dreams I had was to have my kids grow old enough to realize what is going on on the court and what their daddy is doing,” Djokovic said. “So I’ve been very blessed and lucky to experience them watching me in some of the greatest matches I’ve played in my career over the last 56 years.
So, you know, I couldn’t be happier with that.”

Djokovic is still chasing his elusive 25th Grand Slam. The last time he won a Grand Slam was at the 2023 US Open, and since then, the emergence of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has proved to be too much to overcome not only for him but for the entire men’s tennis. Despite that, the Serb is continuing to push himself to the limits so that he can retire on a high note.
