Shai made her debut in the tennis arena during the 2025 U.S. Open. She was seen cheering for her mother during her first-round faceoff against Greet Minnen. Osaka won that battle in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Osaka returned to the tennis court in early 2024, only six months after Shai’s birth. She gave a detailed account of her motherhood experience in a documentary titled Naomi Osaka: The Second Set.

Naomi Osaka Opens Up On Letting Her Daughter Pursue Tennis As A Profession
Naomi Osaka opened up about letting her daughter pursue tennis professionally, stating that she would never stop her from doing things that she likes. Osaka also highlighted that natural trait of following their mother’s steps.
“If she wants to play tennis, she can. I’m never going to stop her from doing anything that she wants to do. I think it’s kind of inevitable because when I was young, I also wanted to do the things that my mom did. My daughter has her own little tennis racket and she sometimes hits the ball. But I think I am focused more on her character and how she grows up to be as a person. I want to create a really good environment around her so that she’s able to grow and learn and explore as best that she can.”
Osaka recently concluded her India Wells campaign after a round of 16 faceoff against Aryna Sabalenka.
