Linda Noskova’s maiden Wimbledon final has prompted former American world No. 3 Pam Shriver to remind the world why Czech players have consistently outperformed their peers at Wimbledon. Shriver went on to pay tribute to her legendary Czech-American doubles partner, Martina Navratilova, whom she credited with inspiring generations of Czech women to stand tall at Wimbledon.
On Thursday, Linda Noskova beat Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in straight sets to bag her first Wimbledon final spot. The All-England Club will now host a historic all-Czech Wimbledon final clash between Noskova and Karolína Muchova on Saturday.
Building on the European clash in London, Pam Shriver credited Thursday’s success to a multigenerational culture rooted in tennis excellence, which she says was started by Martina Navratilova 48 years ago.
“Czech ladies love affair at Wimbledon continues. @Martina steered it all 48 years ago.”
In an amusing update, Shriver acknowledged an autocorrect error that changed the word “started,” which she intended to write, to “steered.”
“I meant to say Martina started it 48 years ago, but it autocorrected to steered it all… I guess that works too.”
Shriver partnered with Navratilova to form one of the greatest women’s doubles partnerships in tennis history; together, they had a legendary 109-match winning streak from 1983 to 1985.
The upcoming finale between Noskova and Muchova is set for Saturday at Centre Court.
Pam Shriver’s Epic History With Martina Navratilova
Pam Shriver and Martina Navratilova share one of the most unique relationships in tennis history. Despite being rivals during the late 1970s, the pair went on to form one of the greatest women’s doubles teams in tennis history in the early 1980s.
At only 16 years old, Shriver reached the US Open final after defeating Navratilova, but lost to Chris Evert. After that, Shriver faced Navratilova numerous times before officially becoming partners in October 1980. Together, they won a staggering 20 Grand Slam doubles titles, including five Wimbledon titles.
Their greatest historic moment was winning all four Grand Slam doubles titles in 1984. The pair faced each other 38 times, out of which Navratilova won 36 times, while Shriver got two wins against the Czech-American.
