Jannik Sinner has refused to disclose details about the illness that troubled him during his semifinal at the Italian Open, leaving fans deeply concerned about his condition.
Sinner reached the last four in Rome after defeating Sebastian Ofner, Alexei Popyrin, Andrea Pellegrino and Andrey Rublev. He then faced Daniil Medvedev in a dramatic semifinal that saw the Italian visibly struggle physically. At one point, Sinner even vomited on court and required medical timeouts, sparking debate among fans and commentators. The match was suspended and resumed the following day, where Sinner eventually sealed a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory.
During his post-match press conference, Jannik Sinner was asked directly about what had been bothering him and the nature of his physical issues. However, the World No. 1 chose not to go into specifics, stating that he preferred not to share details about his condition at this time.
“I am not able to answer that question,” he said.
Fans have now taken to X (formerly Twitter) to react to Jannik Sinner’s words, with one writing:
“Okay now i’m really worried.”
“I’m very normal about this and completely not worried,” another joked.
“Sinner doesn’t respond because he doesn’t want to make himself vulnerable in front of his opponents; the RG is coming up soon and it’s best of 5 sets. So the mystery remains whether it was a physical drop and consequent hunger for oxygen, a full-blown anxiety attack, or stomachache. Definitely something serious,” one fan posted.
“Apart from the tactics then, so as not to leave the flank exposed and all that baloney, but it will be his own damn problem too,” another tweeted.
“Stop playing with me boy we’ve got RG to win,” one user commented.
“He’s truly like mind your business,” another joined in.
Jannik Sinner To Take On Casper Ruud In Italian Open 2026 Final
Jannik Sinner is all set to lock horns with Casper Ruud in the final of the 2026 Italian Open on Sunday, May 17. Ruud has impressed throughout the tournament, defeating the likes of Zachary Svajda, Jiri Lehecka, Lorenzo Musetti, Karen Khachanov and Luciano Darderi to book his spot in the title clash.
Sinner, despite looking physically drained during his semifinal against Daniil Medvedev, expressed satisfaction at reaching the final. Speaking to the media after the match, he acknowledged the tough battle but made it clear that he was happy to have pushed through the challenge and earned his place in the final.
“It was a very different challenge and a tough challenge,” Sinner said. “Usually, during the night, I don’t struggle to sleep but this time it was not easy. You are in the third set, nearly done but you still have to show up again and you never know what is happening. It is like the start of the match as there are nerves again. I am very happy with how I handled this situation and that I back in the final.”
Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud are no strangers to each other, having faced off four times before. On all four occasions: Vienna 2020 and 2021, the ATP Finals in 2024, and Rome in 2025, Sinner emerged victorious.
