Coco Gauff’s heartbreaking semifinal loss has caught the attention of the tennis world and Serena Williams’ 2022 US Open coach, Rennae Stubbs. The American faced a tough loss in her quest to reach her first Wimbledon final against Karolina Muchova in a dramatic three-set tiebreaker match on Thursday.
Gauff entered her first SW19 semifinal after defeating No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinal. Ranked No. 7, she battled Muchova in a tight 2.5-hour contest but lost in a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) thriller.
Now the tennis world and Stubbs have reacted to Gauff’s loss, praising her defensive resilience and fighting spirit but also appreciating Muchova’s impressive game.
Stubbs, who last month was critical of Gauff’s grass-court ability before Wimbledon, has now provided a different perspective on her semifinal match. She wrote on X:
“The errors players make on “easy” shots playing Coco is because she has the ability to run down so many balls and so they over think and over play. Loving this cat 🐱 and mouse 🐭 match with these two.
@karomuchova7 @CocoGauff @Wimbledon.”
Alongside Stubbs, fans expressed support for Gauff, while also sharing differing opinions.

Coco Gauff Had a Grueling Semifinal at Wimbledon Against Karolina Muchova
Coco Gauff took the Centre Court for her first Wimbledon semifinal match on Thursday. The American squared off against Karolina Muchova for the eighth time in her professional career for a grueling two-and-a-half-hour battle on grass.
Muchova won the first set 6-2 when Gauff made 12 unforced errors. The American, however, cleaned up her game and won the second set 6-1, which pushed the match to a deciding tiebreaker final set.
The third set proved to be one of the toughest of the contest, as both delivered powerful baseline rallies and kept the match going with great net play. Gauff put up a fight and earned a 9-8 match point but failed to convert it because of a forehand drop shot into the net.
Muchova ultimately capitalized on the error and won the match in a grueling 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) victory.
