Coco Gauff opened up about her secret behind winning three-set matches at Wimbledon following her quarterfinal match on Tuesday.
Gauff advanced to the semifinals with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over fellow American Jessica Pegula. During her post-match press conference, she was asked how she approached matches after losing the first set. Responding candidly, she said:
“Well, not as much as y’all think. Most of the time, I’m just using the bathroom, and then I’m just like, Well, leave it out there on the court. Hopefully I can leave this court with my head held high. Sometimes I try to analyze what I did in certain moments, try to do better in the next,” said Coco Gauff.
She added:
“Yeah, the main thing is honestly I want to play a match that I can leave, regardless of the result, proud of. That’s really the main thing I’ve been thinking about this whole tournament.”
Coco Gauff began her Wimbledon campaign on June 29 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tamara Korpatsch. She then defeated Solana Sierra, Claire Liu, and Belinda Bencic to progress to the quarterfinals, where she overcame Pegula.
Coco Gauff made her feelings known about her quarterfinal win at Wimbledon
During her post-match press conference on Tuesday, Coco Gauff was also asked what her quarterfinal victory over Jessica Pegula at Wimbledon meant to her. Describing the win as ‘special,’ she exuded pride in herself, saying:
“Definitely, I think it feels really special considering the results I’ve had of late and just especially on this surface. It definitely is special. I think I’m able to relax a bit because, I don’t know, I just feel regardless of how the rest of this tournament goes, I really think I’ve found, like, a bit of a breakthrough on grass,” said Coco Gauff.
She added:
“Regardless of, yeah, how it goes, I think I’m just proud of myself. Obviously I’m not satisfied. I want to go all the way. Also, at the same time, I’m just looking at the match in front of me and just trying to keep doing better each point.”
Opening up about the opponents she faced at the tournament, she further added:
“I think for me, I’ve played, like, three opponents in a row where I feel like are really tough opponents like in general, but especially for me on grass. I felt like in the first set I was maybe rushing out of some points too early, either trying to either get out of the rally or overhit too much. Towards the end, I just really honed in on my game and realized I don’t have to play a spectacular point every time to win, even though there were some spectacular points.”
Coco Gauff will face Karolina Muchova in the semifinal of the Wimbledon Championships on Thursday.
