Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, recently explained Novak Djokovic’s strong form at Wimbledon, highlighting his newfound aggression on the court. The tournament commenced on June 29 and will run through July 12.
Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals at the All England Club after securing a 7-6(6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Roman Safiullin in the fourth round on Sunday. With the victory, he recorded his 106th men’s singles match win at Wimbledon, surpassing Roger Federer for the most men’s singles match wins in the tournament’s history.
As the Serb continues his bid for his record-tying eighth Wimbledon title and a historic 25th Grand Slam trophy, Gilbert analysed his performances during an appearance on the Tennis Channel. Highlighting his aggressive style on the court and analysing his performance at this age, Gauff’s former coach said:
“I also feel like that when you get older, obviously physically you’re not the same. Maybe your movement isn’t the same, but the brain gets bigger. It allows you to make some decisions that you could do. Look what Tom Brady was doing at 45 years old. I mean, big George Foreman came back, won the heavyweight title of the world. So, I feel like that this court, even though it’s slower than it’s ever been, you’re still rewarded for playing aggressively.”
He added:
“And so, I do think that come the latter parts of this tournament. Novak is going to have to up his power quotient. He won’t be able to depend upon just using his legs. And I think that’s why we are seeing more offense from him because I think he plans to incorporate that later in the tournament.”
Novak Djokovic is now all set to face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinal round of the Wimbledon Championships.
Novak Djokovic made his feelings known about fourth-round victory at Wimbledon
After his fourth round win at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic reflected on the match during his on-court interview. Describing it as a ‘hard-fought’ contest, he praised Roman Safiullin as a ‘solid player’ and wished him luck for the rest of the season.
“Yeah, another hard fourth win. Uh Roman started very well. I mean, very aggressive, you know, I didn’t feel maybe so comfortable from back of the court. I knew it’s going to be a challenge staying in the rally with him, particularly from that end, where you played against the wind pretty much the the whole match. So just very solid player you know I respect him a lot,” said Novak Djokovic.
He added:
“I played him in different surfaces never on grass though and he has had some great wins this week and wish him good luck for the rest of the season. He should be proud of the performance he had today.”
Novak Djokovic has won seven Wimbledon Championships titles in his career, lifting the trophy in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.
