World No. 7 Coco Gauff will face fellow American Claire Liu in the third round at Wimbledon on Court 1 today. Gauff faced a tough challenge in the second round against Argentine Solana Sierra, ultimately winning after a close tiebreak in the decisive set.
As Gauff advances in London, she made a rare lighthearted confession that caught fans’ and analysts’ attention. In response to a question from a women’s sports content creator on TikTok, she said she watches Love Island USA, especially during her commute to the All England Tennis Club, because of the time difference.
“Because of the time difference, I’m watching it in the car ride on the way to the match in the morning, and Melanie had me tearing up for her,” Gauff said.
Sharing Gauff’s response, the insider marveled at the American’s pre-game ritual at Wimbledon.
“Huge breaking news: Coco Gauff watches Love Island USA before she plays in Wimbledon. This is confirmed now. I asked the question yesterday, and she responded to me. Because of the time difference, I’m watching it in the car ride on the way to the match in the morning, and Melanie had her tearing up for her. Imagine crying over Melanie and then having to go play over two hours of tennis, playing tennis and thinking about movie night. It’s a next level of athleticism I could never understand. I love women’s sports,” the insider said.
Gauff began the year as World No. 3 but has dropped in the WTA rankings because she hasn’t won any WTA titles so far. Her recent performances at the past two Grand Slams have been disappointing, and she has reached only two WTA 1000 finals this season, losing the Miami Open final to Aryna Sabalenka and the Italian Open final to Elina Svitolina.
Coco Gauff Welcomes Decision of WTA Finals Being Hosted at Indian Wells
In 2024, the WTA and Saudi Arabia’s PIF agreed to a three-year deal, making Riyadh the host city for the season-ending tournament. However, the agreement was mutually terminated after two years.
Indian Wells will host this year’s edition of the Finals as the WTA searches for a permanent venue. After beating Sierra in the second round, Coco Gauff was asked about her thoughts on Indian Wells hosting the WTA Finals until a permanent location is found.
“I’m really biased, so I’m really happy it’s in the U.S. As an American, it’s cool. It’s going to be weird going to be in Indian Wells in November. I’m very curious if we’re going to be playing in the night or the day. I hope the day, because I feel it’s going to be a little chilly at night,” Gauff said.
Gauff will have her work cut out for her against Liu today. The two-time Grand Slam champion leads Liu 2-0 in their head-to-head. Today’s meeting will be their third overall and their first on grass.
