On Tuesday, Ben Shelton shared some unfortunate news on social media. The American tennis star informed fans that his grandmother, Regina Ann Shelton, had died on March 27 at the age of 90. The funeral was arranged on April 27.
Shelton posted the following unfortunate message on Instagram along with nostalgic photos and memories he created with his grandmother. Their entire family got together for her grandmother’s funeral.
“It’s been a difficult time for me to find the words, but I lost my grandmother last month, and my family and I celebrated her life yesterday at her home in Alabama,” Shelton captioned.
Shelton added that her grandmother is the reason he is playing tennis:
“She was a beautiful woman who had more love in her heart than anyone I have ever met. She was a fighter until the very end. I could talk for days about the impact she’s had on me, and without her I would never be playing tennis, much less professionally. I’ve been feeling a lot of pain but seeing how many people she touched and hearing those stories yesterday brings me so much comfort. I know she’s in a better place now, and I thank God for every moment we shared together and I miss her every day. I love you, Grandear ❤️”
Earlier in February, when Ben Shelton won the Dallas Open, he remembered and shared an update on his grandmother during a post-game interview.
“I knew it was going to be a battle. And as I said in my interview before this one, it is for my grandmother. She’s been fighting hard. I was trying to fight hard out here on the court as well,” Shelton said.
Ben Shelton Honors Grandmother By Winning BMW Open
Despite the tough loss, Ben Shelton didn’t let the moment send him into despair. Instead, he honored his grandmother in the best possible way. Earlier this month in Munich, Shelton won his second ATP title this year, defeating Flavio Cobolli in the finals of the BMW Open.
At the time, Shelton didn’t share that his grandmother had already passed away. But we now know how it might be for him to focus after going through such a tragic event.
The tight-knit Shelton family is as professional as it comes. Coached by his father Bryan, Shelton is now preparing for the Italian Open beginning next week.
