Aryna Sabalenka did not hold back while addressing a controversial umpire decision during her Australian Open semifinal after being called for hindrance due to her grunting. This ruling left the world No. 1 both surprised and visibly frustrated.
Sabalenka faced Elina Svitolina in the semifinal round on January 29 at the Rod Laver Arena. The Belarusian solidified her status by dominating the showdown, claiming an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win. At the beginning of the fourth game, umpire Louise Azemar Engzell called the Belarusian after she made a prolonged grunt. However, the hindrance call did not affect her, and she dominated the rest of the match, advancing to the finals.
The world No. 1 sat in the post-match press conference, where one of the journalists asked her views on the hindrance call. Revealing her unfiltered thoughts on the incident, she said that nothing like this ever happened to her and said that even though the situation pissed her off, the aggressiveness helped her win the game.

“Oh, that’s actually never happened to me. Like never never happened to me. Especially with my grunting that it’s like, you know, I had, I don’t know. It’s like it’s so off, I think. And the way that I don’t know exhale it just because of I don’t know. I don’t know how to explain. It was just like the ball was deep. It’s the ball’s bounce was wrong, and it was just like the timing,” said Aryna Sabalenka.
    He added:
“I was like exhaling, and it just happened naturally, and then she called it, and I was like, “What? What is wrong with you? Like, I mean, there was, I mean, I think it was a wrong call, but whatever, she really how do I say it in a nice way? She really pissed me off, and it’s actually helped me and benefit my game. I was more aggressive. If I was, I was not happy with the call, and it really helped me to get that game. So if she ever wants to do it again, I like want to make sure that she’s not afraid of it, go ahead, call it. It’s going to help me.”
Sabalenka is now gearing up to compete in the final round, and her opponent is yet to be decided.
