Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova’s anti-doping controversy has drawn widespread attention in the tennis fraternity. Former World No. 1 Andy Roddick has been the latest to offer his opinion on the issue, raising some valid questions.
Roddick’s comments about Vondrousova’s anti-doping charge came during the latest episode of the “Served” podcast, as he asked his fellow panelist to summarize the issue and explain the potential ban period the Czech player could face if found guilty by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
“I mean, that’s as much as a positive test for like the worst of it, isn’t it? To me, this is very straightforward. I’m stressed, I’m at a breaking point, I’m all of these things. Yes, understood. The way that it works when you’re a player is that you have to provide an hour to be tested, and you don’t know when that test is coming,” Roddick said.
“You don’t know if you’re going to get tested back-to-back days, you don’t know if it’s going to be six months in between at-home tests. If it’s not during the time that she had given or the hour that she had given, then they’re wrong. All of this opinion needs to be based on the confirmation that it’s not during this hour,” he added.
“If Vondroušová has said it at this point, we have no reason not to believe what she’s saying. If her hour is 7 to 8 a.m. and someone knocks on her door at 8.30 at night, the story is totally plausible. My opinion changes if it’s during the hour that she’s given. It’s that simple to me,” the American concluded.
Vondrousova could face a four-year ban from professional tennis if found guilty of the charges under investigation by the ITIA, which claims that the WTA pro denied entry to a doping control officer at her home for a test in December 2025.
According to the ITIA rulebook, a player could face a ban for refusing to submit a sample for a doping test and for failing to provide a clear justification after being duly notified by a doping officer in advance, as this would be deemed a clear violation of their protocols.
What Explanation Did Marketa Vondrousova Give for the Whole Anti-Doping Charge?
Earlier this month, Vondrousova took to her Instagram account to share her thoughts and feelings about the whole incident, explaining how she has been dealing with mental and physical stress, which has heavily hampered her playing time on court this season.
“The recent doping control incident happened because I reached a breaking point after months of physical and mental stress. When someone rang my doorbell late at night without properly identifying themselves or following protocol, I reacted as a person who felt scared. In that moment, it was about feeling safe, not about avoiding anything,” Vondrousova wrote.
“It is very tough for me to talk about this, but I want to be transparent with you about my mental health. For a long time, I’ve been dealing with injury, constant pressure, and ongoing sleep issues that left me feeling exhausted and fragile. It slowly wore me down more than I probably realized at the time. On top of that, years of hateful messages and threats have affected how safe I feel in my own space,” she added.
The Czech star concluded by stating that she was taking much-needed time off the court to heal both mentally and physically, that tennis was her world, and that she was tirelessly working to clear her name in this controversy. Ultimately, she expressed gratitude to her boyfriend and family for standing by her side during this challenging time.
