Novak Djokovic’s former strategist, Craig O’Shannessy, has compared Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to Tom Brady and late Kobe Bryant. O’Shannessy also explained why the rest of the ATP players have not been able to challenge the top two stars.
Alcaraz and Sinner have established a duopoly over the last two years, splitting the last eight Grand Slam titles. O’Shannessy believes the other players will continue to remain clueless unless they start studying the two youngsters’ styles and finding out their weaknesses.
During a recent conversation with the “Australian Associated Press” in Melbourne, O’Shannessy said Alcaraz and Sinner always devise strategies for their opponents.
“The best athlete who did this kind of opponent analysis was Kobe Bryant. He studied the movement of the player, the footwork of the player. He studied their body language. He studied how teammates interacted with each other, and he knew more about the opponent than they did,” O’Shannessy said.
“And it was also exactly the same as Tom Brady, who famously studied opponents and came out and said, ‘I know their defense and I know their players better than they do,’ and found their vulnerabilities. Sinner and Alcaraz are rewriting the book of Kobe Bryant and Tom Brady,” he added.
At the ongoing Australian Open, World No. 1 Alcaraz has reached the quarterfinals, while World No. 2 Sinner will play his fourth-round match against compatriot Luciano Darderi on Monday, January 26.
Roger Federer Weighs In On Alcaraz-Sinner Rivalry
Tennis legend Roger Federer arrived in Melbourne ahead of the 2026 Australian Open to play an exhibition match. The Swiss maestro addressed the media, where he was asked to comment on the rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
Federer showered praise on both the youngsters and especially mentioned the 2025 French Open final, where the Spaniard prevailed in a five-set thriller.
“The rivalry with Alcaraz and Sinner is a great one; they play incredible tennis. That French Open final was unreal. The game, not that it needed it, but it was great that we had it. For a second, for a moment, the world stood still in the sporting world and watched towards Paris, what was going on in that epic fifth set, because it could have ended much, much sooner, obviously for Jannik,” Federer said.
“Then, all of a sudden, it ended up in this most crazy fashion. Maybe one of the greatest games we’ve ever had in our sport. It’s good we still live off that momentum,” he added.
Alcaraz lost the first two sets and saved three match points in the fourth set to win 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) in five hours and 29 minutes, the longest French Open final. This was the first time Alcaraz and Sinner clashed in a Grand Slam final.
