Former four-star quarterback Devin Brown joined Ohio State as an early enrollee last January, but just over a year later, rumors of a potential transfer have circulated. On Monday, Brown shot down those rumors and had a message for those who believed he would run away from competition.
Ohio State QB Devin Brown Shoots Down Transfer Portal Rumors
Ohio State currently has a five-way battle at QB, with Brown and Lincoln Kienholz the only returning passers from last season. The other three competitors are former Kansas State 27-game starter Will Howard, Alabama freshman transfer Julian Sayin, and five-star recruit Air Noland. Suffice it to say, Brown has his work cut out for him, but that’s not something he is shying away from.
“Honestly, I think people are cowards. I think people have this thought in their own heads that I’m gonna leave and I’m a quitter, but that’s never been me,” Brown began. “These people live wherever, in their mom’s basement, saying stuff about me, and they don’t know s*** — excuse my language — but they don’t know anything. They don’t know who I am; they don’t know who I’ve been. And that’s always who I’ve been.”
Brown is a talented passer in his own right, committing to the Buckeyes over offers from USC, Texas, and Ole Miss as the No. 1 recruit out of Utah and the sixth-ranked QB overall. He battled Kyle McCord for the starting spot last season, pushing the battle into the fall.

Head coach Ryan Day spoke about Brown and the 2024 QB competition in February:
“It’s going to be a fierce competition this spring. But there’s already some camaraderie in that room. And Devin really has the most experience out of that group coming back. He’s shown really good leadership. Even coming off the [Cotton Bowl], a little bit disappointing being injured and everything, but he’s rehabbed well. … Excited to see the spring.”
Of course, bringing in three new players at any position — let alone quarterback — signals a longing for change by the coaching staff. But as Brown said, he’s not backing down. Now, it’s time to reinforce his words with action.
