Washington Commanders’ owner Josh Harris, after recently appearing in Friday’s release of the infamous Epstein files as released by the US Department of Justice, has clarified his position on the same.
In a statement issued to WJLA-TV by his team, the founder of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and majority owner of NBA and NFL franchises like the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils denied having any independent relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
The statement also revealed how Harris made a positive attempt to distance himself from Epstein’s constant attempts to develop business relationships by not returning his calls and avoiding meeting him.
“Josh Harris never had an independent relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Harris sought to prevent Epstein’s attempts to develop a corporate relationship with Apollo. As these emails indicate, Harris sought to avoid meeting with Epstein, canceling meetings and having others return his calls”, the statement read.
Harris’ name in the files came under the lens after the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that a phone call and multiple emails were made between him and Epstein over three years from 2013 to 2016.
The time period of Harris’ alleged involvement with Epstein is another point to be noted, considering how Epstein was apprehended back in 2019 on the charges of child sex trafficking, having also pled guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution back in 2008.
Email Exchanges Put Harris and Epstein’s Personal Relationship Under Scrutiny
The files, as released by the Department of Justice, saw Epstein allegedly inviting Harris for breakfast over an email invitation back in 2014. The email also saw founder and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates allegedly being a part of the same breakfast.
Despite denying having any personal relationships with Epstein, the release saw Harris and Epstein having a back-and-forth over email discussing the breakfast.
“Sorry i missed you. Crazy week.U around any time from now to sunday? Whats this Bill Gates thing about? Tks for thinking about me “, Harris wrote to Epstein in November 2014.
“I thought you might like to schmooze. Nothing but fun friday 5th breakfast”, Epstein responded to Harris’ email.
Despite these exchanges putting the $11B-worth NFL franchise owner under tight scrutiny, Ryan W. Briggs and Max Marin of the Inquirer have revealed how the released documents do not indicate Harris’ involvement in sexual misconduct.
