Former NFL player Emmanuel Acho has issued advice to WNBA players as they step into the limelight and face the negative aspects of fame. According to Acho, “criticism is the cost of praise”, as he warns players to accept that with more opportunities, more hate will follow.
“Criticism is the cost of praise…when you see yourself getting criticized, just understand in large part, that’s because some individuals are praising you,” he said on Speakeasy.
“With that being said, you can’t ask for new contracts, and ask for more money, private jets, but not understand the fine print. And the fine print of being wealthy or a public figure…is going to be this criticism.”
A large part of Acho’s point comes from the ongoing situation surrounding Caitlin Clark in particular. It has put the spotlight on WNBA players, and with it comes criticism. Clark appears to have been targeted by a number of flagrant fouls, and action is being demanded to ensure fair play is maintained, but some of the threats have gone over the line, with discrimination and racism coming into play.
Chicago Sky’s Elizabeth Williams Confirms Meeting With Cathy Engelbert to Address Abuse
Elizabeth Williams is currently serving as the WNBPA’s secretary and confirmed that a meeting has been scheduled with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert ahead of the 2026 All-Star Game to address concerns around the safety of players amid online abuse.
“There’s going to be a conversation with player leadership and Cathy (Engelbert) coming up,” Williams said to Front Office Sports.
“So I think hopefully from that we get more tangible steps and making sure that we’re not always on the back end of these things and we continue to do things ahead of time … (the league) is being a little too reactive.”
Natasha Cloud, Chelsea Gray, Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and Courtney Williams are among the WNBA players who have voiced concerns about online abuse.
