New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III has created plenty of trade chatter in recent weeks. While he does not have an expiring contract, there is a feeling that the Pelicans are willing to hear offers for him. However, there’s a difference between entertaining offers for one of your best players and actually moving him.
One team he has been linked to at times in the past is the Golden State Warriors, and that continues to be the case with the NBA draft less than a week away.
In his most recent report on Wednesday, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line wrote that the Pelicans are “no longer hanging up on teams calling to inquire about two-way wing Trey Murphy III and that the Warriors’ longstanding interest in Murphy has been well chronicled.”
The 26-year-old would be an excellent addition to the Warriors’ lineup. He would not only provide solid production but also give them more size and physicality for the playoffs. The floor-spacing wing would add outstanding depth alongside Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler. Thus, it makes sense that Golden State has him on its radar. However, Murphy is under contract through 2028, meaning he would be much more than a short-term rental for the Warriors if acquired.
Warriors’ No. 11 Pick Could Tempt Pelicans Into Trey Murphy III Deal
With the 2026 NBA draft now just days away, we are finally beginning to get an idea of what the Golden State Warriors might do with the 11th overall pick.
The Warriors front office has been quietly plotting its next move for some time, and it has been well documented that the organization is open to trading the No. 11 pick in exchange for immediate help.
Fischer has also reported that the Pelicans are interested in acquiring a lottery pick ahead of the draft, with Nate Ament emerging as an intriguing prospect to watch. However, for the Warriors to land a player like Trey Murphy III, significant assets would likely have to go the other way. A potential package could include the No. 11 overall pick, Brandin Podziemski and Moses Moody, a 2027 pick swap and a 2028 first-round pick.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see whether a blockbuster trade for a high-impact forward ultimately comes to fruition.
It is far from a secret that Murphy could benefit from a change of scenery. He is coming off a career-best season, appearing in 66 games and averaging 21.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
With numbers like those, he has shown he can be a legitimate star when playing at his best. Surrounding him with players like Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler in the Bay Area could help elevate his game even further.
