Timberwolves Named Potential Landing Spot For Celtics Guard Amid Giannis Antetokounmpo Pursuit

One of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ top goals this offseason should be finding an upgrade in the backcourt. It would be huge for the Timberwolves to bring in another high-impact guard as their championship contender window continues to open.

In a recent article for The Athletic, Sam Amick named Boston Celtics guard Derrick White as a potential trade fit for the Timberwolves as they look to improve their roster.

“The Blazers have been among the suitors for Giannis Antetokounmpo since the February trade deadline but appear to be on the outside looking in at the moment. Similarly, league sources say the Minnesota Timberwolves –  whose Antetokounmpo pursuit also appears to have cooled – have strong interest in the Celtics’ Derrick White,” Amick wrote.

When looking at the season White just had for the Celtics, it’s easy to see why he would be an intriguing fit alongside Anthony Edwards. White undoubtedly had a down year by his standards, averaging 16.5 points per game while shooting 32.7% from three-point range (his worst mark since the 2022-23 season). However, his past playoff success and ability to step up in big moments could still generate significant interest in his services this summer.

He has also been remarkably durable over the last five years, appearing in well over 70 games in each season. With that kind of consistency, he could slot in nicely alongside Edwards in Minnesota’s backcourt.

The Celtics’ interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo is also part of a broader effort to reinforce their roster. Boston has been heavily linked to several high-profile names in recent months. More recently, rumors have connected White, Jaylen Brown, and draft capital in potential packages for Antetokounmpo, though nothing has materialized yet.

The Greek Freak remains one of the most appealing options in the league. Known for his size, length, and two-way dominance, Antetokounmpo typically contributes around 30 points and 10 rebounds per game while providing elite impact on both ends of the floor.

Derrick White Complements Anthony Edwards Due To Olympic History

Whether the Timberwolves pursue Derrick White aggressively or simply use him as a benchmark for other targets remains to be seen. However, if White is available and a trade is a realistic option, Minnesota should strongly consider making a move for him.

It is no secret that White has a connection with Anthony Edwards due to their time together on Team USA during the 2024 Paris Olympics, so the chemistry between them is already there. As a result, bringing in a versatile guard like White would make a lot of sense.

However, he would not come cheap. The Celtics are likely to demand a significant return, meaning Timberwolves president Tim Connelly will have to carefully balance cap space and asset management, especially after an ultimately disappointing playoff run.
