Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has a distinct style on and off the court. This week, the OKC star decided to switch things up by shedding his signature braids.
After seeing SGA with less hair at the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers, fans concluded that Gilgeous-Alexander was somehow a lesser man.
The change in hairstyle didn’t seem to slow Gilgeous-Alexander down, as he finished with 26 points, three rebounds, and four assists as Canada defeated Puerto Rico 110-84 on Friday.
Though SGA has been going on deep playoff runs with the Thunder over the past three seasons, fans can expect to see him staying busy even in the summertime. Last month, the Canadian men’s basketball team confirmed that Gilgeous-Alexander would banner the initial roster for the 2027 FIBA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics.
According to Canada’s head coach, Gordie Herbert, players need to make a “three-year commitment in the run-up” to those two major tournaments to stay in the running for the final lineup.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s decision to play in this current window signifies his interest in making the cut for the World Cup and the Olympics. Whether or not he’ll have his braids back by 2027 is another matter altogether.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Calls Toronto Raptors “A Good Team” After Adding Kawhi Leonard in Offseason
After the Canada-Puerto Rico game, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was asked about Kawhi Leonard running things back with the Toronto Raptors. Gilgeous-Alexander responded by saying that the Leonard trade bodes well for the Raptors’ chances, not to mention their fanbase.
“Adding a guy like that to your roster, no matter where you’re from or what team you are, amplifies everything, your fanbase, your ability as a team on both ends of the floor. He’s a really good player. Toronto should be a good team next year for sure.”
Leonard returns to the Eastern Conference in this trade, but it’s only a matter of time before he and Gilgeous-Alexander cross paths again.
