LeBron James Contract: Are Lakers Bringing Back 4x MVP Next Season? Insider Drops Major Report

LeBron James is in the twilight of his career, and speculations about his future have been growing with every passing day. Given that he is still averaging 22 points and 6.7 assists in his 23rd NBA season, the forward might have some time before he hangs up his sneakers. However, whether it will be in the purple and gold is still a big question.

James has exercised his player option to play with the LA Lakers for the 2025-26 season and will be a free agent this offseason. Even though the front office hasn’t seemed interested in offering him an extension up until now, recent reports suggested that the team might consider offering him a deal with one condition.

ESPN’s NBA analyst Brian Windhorst recently reported that the Lakers’ management might want LeBron James to take “a significant pay cut” to remain with the team.

James is worth $52 million this season, and the franchise already has a max player in Luka Doncic. Moreover, Austin Reaves will also be eligible for a max extension this offseason. This might put the 4-time NBA champion in a difficult spot.

The Lakers will look to build around Luka Doncic in the coming seasons, and the first thing they will need is cap space. Reaves and Doncic have looked good together on the court thus far. The duo is one of the highest-scoring pairs this season. This might encourage the front office to keep the two together, and that might mean LBJ taking a cut if he wished to play aside the two guards.

LeBron James gets an emotional tribute in Cleveland

LeBron James returned to Cleveland, and the city was on its feet to welcome its home star. Even though the Lakers lost the game 99-129 due to a weak defensive effort and another dismal bench performance, with just 22 points from the main backups, James received an emotional and fitting welcome from his hometown crowd.

The Akron native spent seven seasons of his early days in Cleveland. During the tribute, the forward was visibly emotional, as he was seen fighting back tears before he took the court.

Although James Sr. shot just 3-10 from the field, scoring 11 points, three rebounds, and five assists, James Jr. was perfect from the field when rookies took the court at the end of the game. He scored 3-3 from the field and drained two 3-pointers to add eight points.

It would surely have been a surreal moment for the 4-time NBA champion who took the court in his hometown for the first time with his son. While trade clouds loom over his head, LeBron James seems to be enjoying his time with the Lakers as he looks to add another ring to his decorated NBA career.
