Lakers Injury Report: New Luka Doncic Update, Concerns Loom on Luke Kennard and Jarred Vanderbilt For Game 2 vs OKC (May 7)

The Los Angeles Lakers face a tough task ahead in Game 2 of their second-round series against the OKC Thunder. The Lakers have officially ruled out Luka Doncic again, who is likely missing the entire series after providing the latest update on his recovery. While talking to the media for the first time during the playoffs, Doncic shared that he was initially given an eight-week timeline by his doctors in Spain.

After getting PRP injections, Doncic’s timeline has been reduced to six weeks. However, even if the Lakers extend the series to seven games against the Thunder, it would end shortly before that mark. The Lakers are likely facing a greater risk of elimination well before that, making Doncic’s return an unlikely proposition in the conference semis.

Meanwhile, Luke Kennard and Jarred Vanderbilt have been added to Los Angeles’ injury report. Kennard is a fresher addition, given that he was healthy and didn’t have any injury after Game 1. However, the Lakers have listed him as questionable due to neck soreness. He could be a game-time decision.

Though Kennard has struggled since Game 3 of the first round, he remains a potent offensive weapon for the Lakers due to his shooting ability and gravity. Kennard has averaged 11.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 40.7% 3-point shooting. If he sits, it could be a huge blow for the Lakers as Kennard is the third-most-used player.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt was an expected addition after he suffered a full dislocation of his right pinky finger in Game 1. Vanderbilt sustained the painful blow in the second quarter after he attempted to block Chet Holmgren’s lob dunk. Vanderbilt also had to get stitches after the bone in his finger pierced through his skin.

Still, Vanderbilt is day-to-day and can return in this series. For now, he’s listed as doubtful and is unlikely to play in Game 2.
