Knicks Trade Rumors: Amid Jrue Holiday Interest, 2 Other Sub $5M Guards On New York’s Radar

The New York Knicks have reportedly engaged with the Portland Trail Blazers on a potential trade for Jrue Holiday. However, the Leon Rose-led front office has backup plans ahead of the deadline if they can’t pull off a move for Holiday. According to the latest trade rumors, New York is considering cheaper alternatives, Keon Ellis and Jose Alvarado.

Both are earning less than $5.0 million. Ellis is on the books for $2.3 million, while Alvarado is owed $4.5 million. In comparison, Holiday is earning $32.4 million, making it challenging to maneuver a trade for him. Here’s what insider Chris Haynes reported about the Knicks’ trade deadline plans:

“Look, Knicks have been looking at guys like Jose Alvarado from New Orleans, Keon Ellis, Sacramento. My colleague Marc Stein reported they have some interest level of interest in Jrue Holiday from the Portland Trail Blazers.”

Haynes gave the Knicks a 45% chance of making a move at the deadline. New York seemed like its roster was set for the season after winning the NBA Cup. However, since then, the Knicks slipped to a 6-11 record. They have recovered over the past week, winning three consecutive games after Tuesday’s result against the Kings.

The Knicks are seemingly eyeing smaller guards who can make an impact at the point of attack. Despite boasting the likes of Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Miles McBride, New York has struggled on that end of the floor and could use more focused defenders.

Knicks should focus on securing another big man at the trade deadline

The Knicks should focus on acquiring a center at the trade deadline. While having multiple guards that can defend is a bonus, New York’s need for reinforcements at the five is bigger. Mitchell Robinson has been exceptional when healthy, but he’s not always available to anchor the team’s defense.

Karl-Anthony Towns’ stock among fans has slid due to his defensive limitations and recent offensive slump. The Knicks need reliable options to keep the ship afloat, especially in Robinson’s absence. They are reportedly showing interest in Pelicans’ Yves Missi, so using tradeable assets for him would be ideal.

New York should also consider targeting players like Nick Richards and Robert Williams III to address this hole.
