Jimmy Butler’s future with the Golden State Warriors remains a hot topic in recent trade rumor chatter. It has been reported that the Warriors are interested in bringing in Anthony Davis and LeBron James to form a new “Big Four,” and in return, Butler could be dealt in the exchange. However, a later report suggests that Golden State isn’t interested in moving the soon-to-be 37-year-old forward.
On Monday, Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported that “the Warriors remain reluctant to trade Jimmy Butler” in a potential trade package for Anthony Davis.
The report mentions that Butler’s “strong relationships” with General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and head coach Steve Kerr are major reasons why such a deal is unlikely to take place.
As expected, the report prompted intense debate among fans. Some felt trading Butler is an easy choice if it means getting superstars like Anthony Davis and LeBron James, especially since keeping an expensive 36-year-old coming off a torn ACL is a huge gamble. Several fans compared it to Klay Thompson’s departure, arguing that the franchise legend didn’t receive the same level of loyalty despite helping the Warriors win four NBA titles.
Here’s a look at some of the reactions:
Ever since Butler suffered his ACL injury in January, there has been great uncertainty around his status with the Warriors. And when he spoke to ESPN’s Anthony Slater recently, he said, “It wouldn’t be the first time it has happened to me,” which only set off more alarms. Butler has one more year remaining on his contract at a $56.8 million cap hit. At the time of this writing, it is looking increasingly likely the Warriors will give him another season rather than trade him.
Jimmy Butler Wants to Retire With the Warriors
There has been a lot of talk about what the future holds for Jimmy Butler, but he recently stated that he wants to close out his playing career as a Warrior.
“This is where I want to be done,” Butler told Slater. “Retire here. This organization is top-tier. It’s the best. Keep it a buck. It’s the best. You’re playing with one of the greatest players ever. I’m grateful to be able to witness this. I want to be able to do my part, get this organization back on top where we belong.”
Butler hasn’t been playing his peak basketball for the past two seasons, even if 20.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists on 51% shooting in 38 games before his injury certainly aren’t bad numbers, and he will be 37 years old next season.
The Warriors are likely waiting to see how he plays in his final year under contract, then assess his performance. Even if they do this, it’s a smart move given Butler’s age, and Golden State doesn’t want to risk overpaying a guy who isn’t playing at the same level he was a few years ago.
