With VJ Edgecombe doubtful for Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks due to a lumbar contusion, the Philadelphia 76ers must again test their resilience as they battle for a playoff position.
The No. 3 overall pick exited Wednesday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs in 20 minutes with what appeared to be a back injury. Edgecombe went hard into the 3-point attempt after Carter Bryant bodied him down. He was in noticeable discomfort before teammates helped him off the court as he was hunched over.
He was held out of the lineup for the following game against the Utah Jazz for what the team referred to as a lumbar contusion. Edgecombe is now considered day-to-day and listed doubtful for the Saturday road game.
While many fans were worried about his status, 76ers head coach Nick Nurse’s comments suggest that he’ll be back very soon.
“All the imaging came back good, clean,” Nurse said following the team practice Wednesday. “I did talk to him. He said he was fine. He’ll get re-evaluated here in the next couple days and see where he’s at.”
At 20, VJ Edgecombe has thoroughly impressed the Phillies’ brass this season and has only missed five games so far. Since being drafted by the 76ers, the Bahamian native has become a solid part of the Phillies’ roster. In 57 regular-season games this season, he’s averaging 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists.
They enter Saturday’s game against Atlanta sitting 2.5 games ahead of them in sixth. They are 0-3 against the Atlanta this season and need all players at full strength to avoid a sweep and and maintain their edge in the standings.
