Is Victor Wembanyama Playing Tonight? Spurs Make Tough Decision on Status For Game 3 (Apr. 25)

Victor Wembanyama could’ve made an unexpected appearance in Game 3 of the San Antonio Spurs’ first-round clash against the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. Wembanyama suffered a concussion early in the second quarter of Game 2 on Tuesday. He left the floor on his own but didn’t return and entered concussion protocol. Ideally, most players take seven to 10 days to return after entering the protocol and passing tests.

However, after his concussion didn’t worsen, he participated in cardio work on Thursday. Wembanyama wasn’t a full participant. According to Spurs reporter Jared Weiss, Wembanyama walked around wearing a hoodie and participated in light drills. However, Wembanyama is progressing and with the team in Portland, which is a good sign, suggesting he might return as early as Game 4 after missing Game 3.

The Spurs will hope for the best, especially after losing Game 2 at home. They blew a fourth-quarter 13-point lead and lost 106-103. The Spurs’ next three best options offensively – De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle – shot a combined 36.5% from the floor. The Spurs struggled to contain the Blazers defensively down the stretch. Deni Avdija and Co. had a better chance to attack the paint in Victor Wembanyama’s absence.

The Spurs won that contest 111-98. In Game 2, he managed only five points and four rebounds on 1 of 3 shots in 12 minutes.

Wembanyama struggled for a bit and just as it seemed he was trying to turn things around, he injured himself while attacking the rim.
