Is Austin Reaves Playing Tonight? Massive Update on Lakers Star’s Return For Game 3 Against Rockets (Apr. 24)

Austin Reaves could make a shocking return in Friday’s Game 3 of the Los Angeles Lakers’ first-round series against the Houston Rockets. The rising star is questionable to play after missing the last five games due to an oblique strain he suffered in the April 7 loss to the OKC Thunder.

Reaves was expected to miss multiple weeks due to the ailment. Two weeks after he sustained the blow, he’s already in a position to return. Lakers coach JJ Redick revealed on Tuesday before Game 2 that Reaves had begun his return to play progression. Shams Charania reported that he was doing 1v1 drills and, to make his on-court return, had to go through 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 action to prove his fitness.

It seems Reaves has passed those hurdles for now. However, he remains a game-time decision. Reaves is likely making an early return as he was expected to be out longer. Redick didn’t have a timeline available for him when he last addressed reporters about his availability for the series.

The Lakers will likely remain cautious as they are up 2-0 and have managed without Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic with Luke Kennard and Marcus Smart stepping up offensively. The Lakers have struck great chemistry with active players, so they may be able to survive another game or two without Reaves after protecting home court.

Austin Reaves stats vs. the Rockets

Austin Reaves has averaged 14.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists against the Rockets in 15 games. Reaves didn’t achieve his rising star status until this season, so his numbers don’t justify the impact he may have on the series. This year, Reaves managed 13.7 ppg and 4.7 apg in three outings, out of which, he left one of the games due to a calf injury.

Reaves scored 14 points and dished eight assists on 4 of 9 shots in his last game against the Rockets on Mar. 18, which the Lakers won 124-116. Reaves might come off the bench, as the Lakers will likely prefer maintaining the rhythm they have with the current group. Reaves has adapted to coming off the bench earlier this season and can cause instant impact against Houston’s second unit.
