After missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks are once again at a crossroads. It had been evident for a while that the franchise wasn’t destined to compete at the league’s highest level this season.
What’s even more clear is that the friction between Antetokounmpo and the front office is real. One thing he’s been unhappy about all year? The team simply isn’t good enough. And now, his window to compete for another championship appears to be closing.
Doc Rivers, who was relieved of his head coaching duties with the Bucks after the season finale, didn’t hold back when discussing trade rumors surrounding Antetokounmpo.
“The whole Giannis stuff, it just wasn’t a whole lot of fun,” he said on the Bill Simmons Podcast in his first interview after the Bucks exit. “It just wasn’t. When you’re around Giannis, and then what you hear out the outside, it was two different worlds…. I don’t think Giannis knows if he wants to stay or not. I also don’t know if the organization knows one way or not either”
While a handful of players have already been mentioned as possible trade targets for teams around the league this offseason, no one has garnered more attention than Antetokounmpo.
The 6-foot-11 forward surfaced in the rumor mill during the 2026 trade deadline Soon afterward, reports emerged claiming that the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and New York Knicks were among the teams interested in the 31-year-old.
That speculation faded after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Bucks discussed Antetokounmpo but never got close to a deal. However, it flared up again when Giannis called out the Bucks for shutting him down during the final stretch of the season.
While Giannis is not a free agent until the 2026–27 season, reports have emerged that the Bucks are at least listening to trade offers for the two-time NBA MVP.
Nevertheless, the Greek Freak remains a hot topic in the rumor mill, and his name will likely keep resurfacing as a trade candidate this offseason. It will be interesting to see what moves the Bucks and Giannis end up making in the next season. While the Bucks finished 11th with a 32-50 record, Giannis had season averages of 27.6 points, his lowest since the 2016-17 season.
