During the pandemic period, Lou Williams was involved in a controversy when it was discovered that he went to a strip club after he’d been permitted to leave the “NBA bubble” for another reason. Back then, fans questioned the integrity of Williams, who was reportedly questioned by the NBA when a photo of him at the strip club was posted on social media.
Fast forward to 2026, and Williams has once again raised eyebrows with another anecdote. Appearing on the “Out the Mud” podcast, the three-time Sixth Man of the Year told a story about rushing to Philadelphia after the 76ers had decided to part ways with their franchise player.
“They had traded Allen Iverson…I get to Arkansas at 9:30. I’m on a flight at 12:00 going to Philly. I get there at halftime. They playing against the Wizards. I played the whole third and fourth quarter and never turned back.”
For one reason or another, fans expressed their skepticism towards this story told by Lou Williams.
“Looooool chicken wing lou is at it again lying”
“He also gets some other details wrong – including that Iverson didn’t get traded that day. (He wouldn’t be traded for another 11 days, in fact.) Iverson did release a statement saying he wanted out but the timing doesn’t quite match this story about a 12 PM CT flight, either.”
“For some reason I feel like this isn’t true lol”
“This story is a total fabrication. There’s nothing in his game log that corroborates this. AI got traded in December 2006. Check Lou’s stats.”
“Blatantly lying for what reason”
“this is why I believe nothing these podcast ballers say because they’ll say anything to artificially inflate the myth of themselves.”
In late 2006, Lou Williams was playing for the Fort Worth Flyers of the NBA Development League when he was recalled to the 76ers roster in the wake of Iverson’s trade. However, Williams rejoined the Sixers’ lineup on December 8; Iverson was traded to the Denver Nuggets on December 19.
For one reason or another, Williams made a mess of the timeline of events in 2006. Whether or not he was deliberately lying is another question altogether.
“The Clippers Is the Hood”: Lou Williams Opens up on Difference Between Two L.A.-Based Teams
In the same podcast appearance, Lou Williams shared his opinion on the difference between the LA Lakers and the LA Clippers.
“The Clippers is the hood. Make no mistake about it. The Lakers is Hollywood. We not confused about our identity at all. We embrace it.”
Williams added that Clippers players “embraced” the identity of being the Lakers’ “little brother,” though they are adamant that they are “gangster.”
